Episode No. 17: Leigh Steinberg, Sports Agent

I initially reached out to Leigh Steinberg for an interview because we have a poignant shared connection: last summer, after years of screwing my own stuff up via drinking too much, I also gave it up after battling against it for a long time. So did he, and he struggled with the process too.

Now, we don’t actually discuss alcoholism in this interview — it’s more a look at his career (check out his client list), the agent field as it has evolved, the income disparity between pro athletes and educators, and why athletes have a responsibility to give back.

It was a pleasure to speak with Mr. Steinberg, and I hope you guys enjoy this interview. If you want to see an old-school CNN clip where Steinberg talks about the art of negotiation (because I’m sure you do), here it is:

What’s This All About?

This is a blog and podcast series about the work we all do: the highs, the lows, the effectiveness, the intrigue, the models, the double speak, and the passion. The point is to have discussions with people in those fields about their life and experiences. And hey, sometimes the stories might be funny, too. In the spring of 2013, the new posts started to fade, but you can find them all on iTunes.
